A public festival in solidarity with imprisoned General Secretary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Comrade Ahmad Sa'adat, took place in Western Gaza on August 1, 2009.
The Organization of the Martyr Muhammad Abu Nasr organized the public festival, which included speeches, art and cultural performances. Speakers saluted the leadership and courage of Comrade Sa'adat and all of the brave prisoners, and condemned the lack of attention of the Palestinian Authority to the prisoners' struggle.
The speakers called for national unity and praised the example of Comrade Sa'adat and the Palestinian prisoners in acting in unity among all factions in confrontation of the occupier, placing Palestinian national interests at the forefront, and called upon all Palestinians to look toward the prisoners and highlight their struggle, confronting all attempts to eliminate their achievements and rights won through struggle or to marginalize prisoners' role in the Palestinian movement.
Organizers noted that the isolation of Comrade Sa'adat and the punishments by the prison administration were meant as an attack on all Palestinian political forces and Palestinian prisoners, targeting leaders who adhere to resistance and national unity and ending the so-called "negotiations," noting that the price paid for these principled positions is an isolation cell issued by the Zionists in a failed attempt to eradicate his determination and will.
Abdel Nasser Ferwana, the prisoners' affairs analyst, addressed the role of the prisoners' movement, noting that the prisoners' situation is perhaps the most difficult since 1967 in terms of conditions and cruelty of the occupier's violations of prisoners' rights, their isolation and the escalation of repression and violations against them.
Following speeches, the members of the military branch held a military parade in solidarity with Comrade General Secretary Ahmad Sa'adat.
The event closed with a poem by Abu Zahir in honor of Comrade Sa'adat, and folkloric songs and dances in honor of the prisoners' struggle.
