Ramallah – Ma’an – The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) on Sunday called for launching a solidarity campaign with Ahmad Sa’adat, secretary-general of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, who started a hunger strike in Israel’s custody two weeks ago.
“Israel's racial and oppressive procedures against Palestinian detainees in Israel indicate that the Israeli occupation adopts suppressive and aggressive policies, as well as violates international law,” a PLO statement said.
The PLO said it holds the Israeli government directly accountable for Sa’adat’s life, demanding that they stop "such oppressive procedures against all Palestinian prisoners in Israel’s custody."
Sa’adat has been on hunger strike for two weeks protesting his solitary confinement, a top Palestinian Authority (PA) official said on Thursday.
PA Minister of Prisoners’ Affairs Issa Qaraqe said that he learned that Sa’adat, the PFLP’s secretary-general, is in poor health, and saying that prison guards are attempting to “provoke” him.
Qaraqe told Ma’an in a phone interview that Israeli authorities are responsible for Sa’adat’s life, and called for him to be released from the isolation cell. Qaraqe visited Sa’adat’s family on Thursday.
